Jeff O'Driscoll, MD, practiced emergency medicine in a level-one trauma center for twenty-five years and served as department chair for eight. This program was pre-recorded. Click here to listen to the show. Doctor Jeff recently stepped away from practicing medicine to pursue consulting and to focus on writing. His recent books include a novel, Who Buried Achilles?, a series of children's books about Muck the Duck and friends, and his award-winning memoir, Not Yet, focusing on his spiritual encounters in the emergency department Doctor Jeff gifts began in childhood, shortly after a farm accident took the life of his fifteen-year-old brother. Stan who was a powerful influence in his life. After Stan's death, his influence continued. At sixteen, as Jeff sped along a narrow country lane, he heard Stan say, “You need to slow down.” His voice gripped him, he felt it and hit the brakes. Around the corner there was an accident, there was plenty of damage, but no one was injured. Had he not heeded his warning, he might have been killed. While still a teenager, he continued to have these experiences, he wondered about the messages and why others didn’t experience them. Still naïve, and using the vocabulary available to him at the time, He asked a trusted friend, “Does God ever speak to you in sentences?” Without asking for clarification, she offered a sincere look and said, “Don’t ever doubt that.” Over the years, he learned to trust and go forward. As an emergency physician, he received messages that helped him care for patients. Occasionally they led him to a diagnosis he hadn’t considered. Some people, however, were simply too ill or too injured to survive. And, when a patient died, sometimes he saw their spirit—their eternal essence—leave their body. They always thanked him for his efforts; they were always grateful. Knowing how they felt about their transition helped him when friends and family members left this realm. He knew they were happy. After a quarter century of silence, he finally came to feel he should share these experiences with the world. Many of his experiences are in his award-winning book, Not Yet. As he boarded a plane to his first formal speaking engagement, a kind voice he had come to trust, wrapped around his heart and whispered, “You will help more people with this book than you helped as a physician in the emergency department.” He was so grateful he wept. In his darkest hours his guides continued to teach him. When the veil was drawn back, he experienced eternity, and felt whole. Their message was simple and compelling: “Every experience is to enable you to help others.” As he visit with people, he discern their gifts; he helps them find their spiritual center. Whether speaking to large groups or small workshops, or during one-on-one mentoring, he doesn't give people answers; he help them find their own answers within themselves.
