I had the honor of meeting Joe a few weeks ago "on the road to Damascus"; actually we met at a church event in Damascus PA. I learned about his non- profit organization, Music Loves Math. Music Loves Math operates a school in Ghana, West Africa, which provides free education for under-privileged children in his father's home village. Joe is an award winning music producer and songwriter for the Ghana based music label that he founded GH Brothers Studios. Also he is the songwriter and producer of the Ghanaian American artist, his brother, Jay Ghartey. Joe has won 8 awards at the Ghana Music Awards and Ghana Music Video awards. Prior to founding GH Brothers Studios in 2008, Joe was a Managing Director at the global investment Bank JP Morgan. Presently, Joe teaches middle school Math and Computer science at MACADEMY School of Science and Technology in Brooklyn, NY. Joe graduated with honors from Harvard University with a degree in Applied Mathematics and Economics. Joe was born in Canada to a Ghanaian father and a Canadian mother, but spent the majority of his formative years in Boston and Ghana. Public service and charity have played an important role in his life from a young age. In school Joe was active with Habitat for Humanity, an non-profit organization that builds housing for the less fortunate. Joe also worked to raise funds for a battered woman’s shelter in Cambridge while attending Harvard. Over the past 15 years, Joe has played an active role in SEO (Sponsors for Educational Opportunity), a New York based non-profit organization that provides supplemental education for minority students and provides guidance from high school into college. Joe acted as the co-head of the SIRV initiative (Saving, Investing and Returning Value to communities of color). This organization educates professionals on how to invest, save and maximize philanthropic activities. Music Loves Math
